The sad truth is all of these things we seek to fill our plate with pale in comparison. They have no real power. They cannot save nor satisfy. They cannot love as God does. They cannot be as compassionate and merciful as God is. They do not measure up to His faithfulness. Quite simply, they provide no hope. That is the concluding part of the key verses - "therefore I will hope in him." The "therefore" ties our hope directly back to making the Lord our portion. When the world says no, God can say yes. When the world says there is no way God says He is the way. When the world saps all of our hope God says to hope in Him. To trust in His sovereignty. To bask in His love for us. To marvel in His tender mercies which are made new each morning. To stand in awe and amazement at His faithfulness to us. I pray it overwhelms you to the point of weeping. To be reminded of whom we serve and exactly what He can do. To be driven to our knees in the sheer wonder of God Almighty.
Get well Amanda. God is holding you in the hollow of His hand. He has inscribed your name on His palms. He collects your tears in His bottle. He who started a good work in you will be faithful to complete it. Because of His steadfast love for you. Because His mercies are new each morning. Because He is faithful even when we are not. Because He is God.
