I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. -- 1Timothy 2: 12-14 (NIV)

In the spirit of full disclosure this is a devotional I have avoided writing for some time now. That is because I know many godly women serving the Lord in completely appropriate capacities and then others who while well intended, seem to be perpetually offended whenever a man reads the Scriptures that God has written regarding the role of women in ministry. I understand the frustration because so many men have simply abdicated their correct role as leader and priest in their own families let alone the church. That does not mean however that we throw the Bible away. The truth is that everyone loves the Bible until they get to the part they do not like. Or the part they disagree with. But insisting on our way is the same sin that Lucifer was cast down for. Usurping the throne of God.

Please keep in mind that this does not mean that women are less than men. This does not mean that they do not or cannot serve in vitally important roles within the church. Women can prophesy. Women can do great works. Women can exhibit any of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, just like men. What the key verses teach us however, and do so unambiguously, is that women should not be in teaching/preaching positions within the church where they might exercise authority over men. I have heard all of the twists and contortions Christo-feminists try to change what Paul says very clearly here. In the end all they are left with is to try and read into the culture at Ephesus and specifically within the early Ephesian church, then crawl into the mind of Paul and change the meaning of what he clearly states.

Into this spiritual abyss steps Jory Micah. Jory Micah is an Internet Facebook sensation for women who feel marginalized by the male dominated church culture that God ordained. In her own biography, Micah states that she was born again at 13 and immediately felt called to be a minister. As she grew up and went to college for various Christian degrees she was confronted with the Biblical reality of the correct role of women in the church. Instead of being submissive to the will of God she rebelled against it. She began to see everything God had ordained regarding proper gender roles as oppressive, patriarchal, and perhaps misogynistic. This void she has stepped into is a growing chasm in the church and people like Jory Micah are extremely dangerous to women. Not because she advocates for women but because she advocates against the Bible. Once you compromise on one point of the Bible it becomes so much easier to have a salad bar theology and only take what you want. I perused Jory Micah's Facebook page and excerpted some of her beliefs, just from this year. Let us reason together and ask ourselves if any of this lines up with Scripture:

"I believe that the Holy Scriptures are truth, inspired by the Spirit of God, but I don't believe that God is confined to the Bible. God is much bigger than what is revealed to us in the Bible." -- Jory Micah

This is the same babble you hear from Bill Johnson, Bethel Church, IHOP and all of the NAR. When confronted with the fact that they are teaching wildly unbiblical things, they scream that we are placing God in a box and that He is so much bigger than Scripture. Except He is not. The Gospel of John assures us that Jesus is His Word. The Bible is not a suggestion guide for life. It is the embodiment of God Himself. When you teach things like glory clouds, the bridal paradigm or feminist Christianity however, you need to do something about the Bible that keeps exposing you. Let me break it down real simple for us. The Bible is the inerrant Word of Almighty God. It does not change. It transcends all time and culture. It is infallible. It is entirely trustworthy and honest. When we start talking about stepping outside of the Word of God, even for such pious sounding reasons such as God being "bigger" what we then have to rely upon is our own deceitful hearts. No thanks Jory. I will stick to what the Bible says; even the parts I may not understand fully or agree with. It is ironic that she believes God is bigger but she refuses to accept what He has to say regarding her role in His church.

"God is described as Father by Jesus." Yes, true, but this may be because Jesus was living in an extreme patriarchal culture in which "Father" was the best metaphor available to describe God (and probably still is in much of the world), so humans can understand. The father, in Jesus' day, was the protector, provider, and really the source of all livelihood in the home and outside of the home." -- Jory Micah

Christianity has rejected the theories of Gnosticism from their inception. The truths of God are not hidden. When Jesus calls God Father it is because that is what He, as God chose to do. He did not stop and think, "Gee I wonder what cultural norm I should relate to." Within the culture He was ministering, the Samaritans were utterly reviled yet He spoke to the Samaritan woman and used a Samaritan as the hero in one of His parables. God does not concern Himself with culture -- only man does. Note what Micah is forced to do here. Speculate. That is the hallmark of any feminist Christian teaching. Paul probably meant this. He used Father so people could understand. The Ephesian Church must have had a problem with gossipy women, which is why Paul said they should be silent! I do not need to read into, understand his psyche, or bow to cultural arguments. I just need to read the Scriptures.

"If I, as a woman, am made in the image of God, then God must not only be a "father," but a "mother" as well." -- Jory Micah

Poor hermeneutics at best. This is what happens when you have reached a conclusion and your scour the Bible to find proof that you are right. Proof-texting is what most false teachers use to create their sermons that prop up their doctrines. Let us examine the actual Scriptures to see what they really say.

Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. -- Genesis 1: 26-27 (ESV)

The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, "This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man."-- Genesis 2: 20-23 (ESV)

The Genesis 1 overview is actually clear on its own. God does not say let us make man and women after our own likeness, or image. No beloved. He says let us make man. The portion that says male and female he created them is then explained in the Genesis 2 verses. What do these verses teach us? That even after creating so many different species, there was no suitable helper for Adam. What does this teach us? That Adam was clearly created first and there was some short passage of time (this all occurred on the sixth day) before God decided to cause him to sleep, take his rib and form woman. Now, since Adam was made in the image of God and Eve was made from Adam, there is no argument that Eve is also made in the image of God. But Eve still came after, and from Adam. Jory Micah takes the illogical leap that somehow this must change who God fundamentally is and that is simply unsupported in these texts.

"Religion sucks the life & joy out of us; but, God is NOT religion. Religion is a manmade false god; he's very cruel, overly demanding, & judges harshly." -- Jory Micah

Bzzt. Thanks for playing Jory but now you have completely left Scripture. I mean I understand this sounds so pious just like when that "spoken word" came out a few years back denigrating religion. Do you know who else uses this tactic? The same false signs and lying wonders churches already discussed and the NAR! It is all about "relationship" and religion is relegated to anathema. Except there's one little problem with that:

If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless.Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. -- James 1: 26-27 (ESV)

Religion is a word that God has ordained in His Word! In fact He goes to specific lengths to differentiate between worthy and worthless religion. I am sure that Jory Micah has little issue with the stipulation to visit orphans and widows in their affliction but she fails wildly on the keeping oneself unstained from the world. Her entire doctrine is worldly and carnal. Note here however what she actually speaking against. To Micah, it is religion that judges and is demanding. No Jory -- God does and God is. We can see the slide towards the sloppy agape theologies within her talking points here. God doesn't judge? You better go back and re-read the Bible Mrs. Micah. Not only that but just because God says you should not be teaching with authority over man does not mean you will not be judged by the standard of one who teaches. For every careless word and ever sheep you lead astray. Their blood will be upon your head is what Acts 20 teaches us. You think God is not demanding? Perhaps that is because you have not submitted. Perhaps that is because every time He tries to place a demand upon you the reaction is to scream "oppression!"

"The true God is love; full of abounding kindness, grace, & mercy. The more we know God, the more we become like love. The more we become like love, the more we become our most truest selves." -- Jory Micah

Now we come to the full throated sloppy agape doctrines. It is no surprise that we arrived here. Jory Micah left sound doctrine once she decided she knew better than God when it came to her role. God is most certainly full of abounding kindness, grace and mercy. So much so that He waits patiently for all of us to repent, including Jory Micah. Make no mistake however. Eventually the age of grace ends and then Jory Micah will find out that God is also filled with abounding wrath and abounding justice. The more we know God the more we become like love? Is this San Francisco in the summer of 1967? The truly sad thing is that for someone who has a Master's Degree in Theology, Jory Micah sure does not seem to get Scripture. If you want to see your truest self, read Romans 3. All have turned away. The venom of asps is upon our lips. Our throats are like open graves. None seek God. None. Now the more we know His Word, the more we understand that love apart from doctrine is cruelty. To tell someone that God loves them and to not tell them what He requires? That might be Jory Micah's idea of what love is but it sure is not God's.

"Without the voices of female preachers on Sunday mornings, you & your congregation are missing half of the story." -- Jory Micah

Says absolutely no biblical text anywhere. Note however the underlying belief. Beloved the gospel is no preacher's story; male or female. It is God's story. It is the story of Jesus Christ. I no more want to hear a male preacher's opinion than I want to hear Jory Micah's. I want to hear the Gospel and that is always God's opinion. I do not need the female perspective any more than the male. The Holy Spirit leads us into all truth. Is any of this ringing a bell Mrs. Micah?

BIG NEWS: I AM STARTING A "CHURCH," WITH MY HUSBAND BY MY SIDE. "Here is the bottom line: Why should women continue to pay thousands of dollars to be trained in conservative evangelical colleges and seminaries that are not going to offer them equal job opportunities after they graduate? As for me, I am no longer willing to wait around for these types of churches to start practicing what they preach. God called me to be a minister when I was 13 years old; I am now 33; so it's time for me to move forward, and start my own church, with my husband by my side, as my partner." -- Jory Micah

The fact that your husband does not know his role is not proof that you understand yours. What I always love about discernment ministry work is that eventually false teachers reveal the truth. Here we see the true motivation for Jory Micah. It is not that everyone misinterpreted gender roles for thousands of years. It is not to correct some grand Scriptural injustice. No. It is about equal opportunity. Why should she pay all that money to be told God said she cannot hold authority over men? She openly brags then about no longer being willing to wait. I am sorry Mrs. Micah but that was not God who called you at age 13. At least not to preach or teach with authority over man. How do I know? Because the bible tells me so and as much as you want to believe that God is bigger than what He has already said -- you are wrong. The key verses are incontrovertible. The context is undeniable. Paul is giving instructions to Timothy as he heads off to lead the Church at Ephesus. The very same church Paul declares he is free from their blood because he did not hesitate to proclaim to them the entire will of God. The statement in the key verse is very clear. I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man. In this regard she must remain quiet. God does not stop there. He knew there would be the Jory Micah's of the world who would not like the idea of being told they need to be quiet when it came to certain things. So he included the reason! He actually included two reasons! First because Adam was created first! Interesting that it ties back to the first point made in this devotional. Secondly however is that it was Eve that was deceived and became a sinner. I know it has become popular in the modern politically correct church to share the blame or even blame Adam since he was the head. This verse eviscerates those false teachings. Eve was deceived. Eve became a sinner. As a result, combined with Adam being the first creation, God has decreed a certain order when it comes to authority and teaching. You can try and crawl into the psyches of men who lived two thousand years ago, read into culture that you do not possibly understand, or simply cross your arms and stomp your feet but it does not change what God has already said.

My sisters in Christ. This is not an exercise in authority, superiority or power. Of these I am the very least. I do not exalt myself or any man above anyone else. Only God is worthy of exultation. Not because I agree with everything He commands but because I know that when I can't see the road I know that He has the wheel. That is if I gave the wheel to Him. Far too many of us professing Christians fancy ourselves as co-pilots or partners. I do not doubt the passion of Jory Micah, as misguided as it is. I do not think she is malicious. What she is however is mistaken and badly so. Those mistakes will result in thousands of women following her false teachings, which lead to a false Christ within her false gospel. Maybe in the end you will feel more empowered. Maybe in the end you will be leading your marriage and your church and as far as the world rates success you may even do very well at it. But you will not know Christ. Matthew 7 tells us that scores of people will stand before Him and say Lord Lord. Don't let one of them be you because someone made you feel less than. You have an important role in the body of Christ and do not let anyone marginalize it by saying it is not enough. You can carry the Word of God to the lost beloved. All of you. But you first must believe it for yourself. All of it.
