There are many itching ears in the church today, seeking to hear what they want to hear and not what God says. Sound doctrine is being supplanted by a candy coated prosperity gospel. But look at the charge from Paul. Be prepared in season and out; no holiday from our labor. Do the work of your ministry. That work cannot be lukewarm beloved. We must give ourselves fully to the work He sets before us. Why?
Because the last truth from this verse is that we know our labor is not in vain. I am sure sometimes we go about our jobs in the world wondering of what substance it is. We can spend so much energy on things that have no eternal value. The awards and recognition we receive from the world today will not matter 10 years from now. The rewards and recognition from God however, is of eternal value. It never fades with the passing of time. Jesus taught:
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21
This verse often is only related to material possessions, but it also deals with what we value; what we work for. He wants your heart in His work today. He does not want a half-hearted or lukewarm effort. He wants you to give yourself fully to Him and His work. Let nothing move you. No schemes of the enemy or the world. Stand firm in your labor for the Lord. There is a Labor Day awaiting you in paradise beloved. When the true boss welcomes you and says, "Well done my good and faithful servant." That is what we labor for.
