Keith L. Salzman, MD, MPH joined IBM as their Chief Medical Information Officer for GBS-Federal on April 24, 2014
Dr. Salzman joined IBM to shape and support the DHMSM Procurement and assist in growing Healthcare IT in GBS-Federal. He is a physician, leader and innovator with more than 24 years of success delivering quality care to patients and pioneering informatics in the U.S. Army. Dr. Salzman’s responsibilities include advancing IBM’s capabilities in clinical informatics as well as leveraging his expertise to develop health information interoperability and integration to improve patient care, outcomes and decrease costs.
In his previous position as Chief Medical Information Officer at Madigan Army Medical Center, Dr. Salzman established the premier Informatics Division in the Military Health System. Under his leadership, the Madigan Informatics Division grew from a team of 10 to more than 100 with a budget of $3 million to $6 million over six years.
Beginning in 1989, Dr. Salzman served 22 years of active service in the U.S. Army. His many roles included Team Leader, Professional Filler Surgeon at Tripler Army Medical Center; First Surgeon for the Initial/Interim Brigade Combat team; Deputy Commander for Outlying Clinics in Heidelberg, Germany; and interim Deputy Commander for Clinical Services in both Kosovo and Heidelberg. His served as the Officer in Charge of the Basrah, Iraq Military hospital from Nov 2009 to May 2010 with the 28th Combat Support Hospital Task Force before transitioning to retirement.
Dr. Salzman is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit, American Medical Informatics Association, American and Uniformed Services Academy of Family Physicians, Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems, and American College of Healthcare Executives. He received the HIMSS Physician IT Leader of the Year award for 2013. His military honors include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medals (4) and Expert Field Medical Badge.
Dr. Salzman completed Family Medicine training at Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center and the Faculty Development Fellowship at Madigan Army Medical Center. He holds a bachelor of arts in Philosophy from the University of Minnesota, a doctor of medicine from Mayo Medical School, and a Master of Public Health from the University of Washington. He is Board Certified in Clinical Informatics (2014-2024) and was Board Certified in Family Medicine (1992-2014).
